A woman was sexually assaulted and raped by a perpetrator on New Year’s Day, and when her husband confronted the assailant, he was subjected to a violent attack. Carl Daniels, from Walker, Newcastle, committed the assault after encountering the woman on the street, despite her pleas for him to stop.
Upon discovering the incident, the husband contacted the authorities and then confronted Daniels, who proceeded to brutally assault him, resulting in the husband needing stitches for his injuries. Daniels has been sentenced to over seven years in prison for his actions.
The court heard that the woman had been with a friend on the street in the early hours of January 1 when she crossed paths with Daniels. He forcibly removed her clothing and sexually assaulted her despite her resistance and pleas to stop.
Judge Carolyn Scott remarked that although the assault may have been brief, its effects were profound, describing it as “life-changing.” She emphasized the vulnerability of the woman during the attack due to the circumstances.
Following the assault, the husband suffered physical injuries, including a black eye and cuts to his forehead that required medical attention. Daniels was found guilty of rape, assault by penetration, and assault causing bodily harm. He received a 92-month prison sentence and a lifelong registration on the sex offenders list.
Despite his lack of prior convictions, the court noted that character references in support of Daniels were provided. His defense lawyer acknowledged the significant impact of the incident on Daniels’ life and expressed gratitude for the support from his family.
