A tragic incident occurred at a construction site in London, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old man named Renols Lleshi. The young man fell down a ventilation shaft while assisting in dismantling scaffolding on the roof garden of a building under construction at the Ark Soane Academy site in Mill Hill Road on July 5, 2023. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the ventilation shaft was inadequately covered with only a sheet of plasterboard and roofing foam.
The accident was deemed avoidable, as routine inspections of the building did not encompass the roof garden area, leading to the lack of detection of the hazardous situation. Jerram Falkus Construction Limited, the company responsible for the site, admitted breaching regulations and was fined £42,200 along with additional costs at the City of London Magistrates’ Court.
HSE Inspector Natalie Prince emphasized the significance of preventing falls from height in workplaces, highlighting the tragic consequences of negligence in this case. Renols’ father expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his son, emphasizing the profound impact of the incident on their family. While appreciative of the investigation and legal actions taken, he acknowledged that no remedy could alleviate the pain of their irreplaceable loss.
