British Army Officer Killed in Training Exercise

An inquiry is underway following the tragic death of a British Army officer during a live firing exercise, as revealed in a recent inquest. Captain Philip Gilbert Muldowney, aged 25, lost his life after being shot in the back at Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland, which is among the UK’s largest training grounds.

During the proceedings at Northumberland Coroner’s Court, Coroner Andrew Hetherington disclosed that the incident on January 25 is under investigation by Northumbria Police, the Health and Safety Executive, and the Defence Safety Authority. The coroner detailed that Captain Muldowney sustained a gunshot wound entering his back and exiting through his left shoulder, leading to his tragic demise despite efforts by military medics and ambulance services.

The inquest, attended remotely by Captain Muldowney’s parents, shed light on his background as Gilbert, growing up in Co Roscommon, Ireland, and later serving as a fire support commander in the 129 (Dragon) Battery of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery post his training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

In the wake of his passing, the Ministry of Defence paid tribute to Captain Muldowney as a dedicated officer who radiated enthusiasm and inspired those around him. The inquest has been adjourned until May 19, 2027, with plans to seek an alternative date, as emphasized by the coroner.
