Prince William made a surprise visit to Bournemouth Pier to present the innovative work of his homelessness initiative. Walking along the pier, he attracted a crowd of onlookers eager to capture the moment on their phones.
Accompanied by Lily Childs, her brother William, and cousin Eva, who brought flowers for the Prince, he graciously accepted the gift, expressing his gratitude. When asked to rate Bournemouth, he praised the town’s charm, especially in the sunshine. Responding to a selfie request from Lily, he promised to pose on his way back and fulfilled his word before leaving the pier.
The visit aimed to showcase the Homewards initiative’s success in preventing youth homelessness in Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole. International experts from Australia, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Finland gathered to observe the collaborative efforts between local authorities, charities, and schools in identifying and supporting at-risk youth.
During the meeting, William introduced the experts to local leaders implementing innovative approaches, including the BCP Youth Homelessness Board, which unites various sectors to address the issue. The Prince’s involvement was praised by Francis Beecher, emphasizing the importance of his patronage in fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
Participants shared insights on effective homelessness prevention strategies across different sectors and discussed scaling up these approaches nationally and internationally. William also engaged with Theo, a member of Homewards’ National Co-Production Group, who shared his experiences of homelessness to shape the program’s initiatives.
Dr. Stephen Gaetz commended William’s dedication to addressing youth homelessness, highlighting the impact of his advocacy in driving change. Freek Spinnewijn from FEANTSA emphasized the significance of royal engagement in raising awareness and support for homelessness issues globally.
The Prince’s commitment to ending homelessness and his support for initiatives like Homewards were well-received by participants, who acknowledged the importance of his advocacy in effecting positive change in the sector.
