“Travel Expert Warns: Gulf Region Travel Risks”

Upon returning from the conflict-ridden region of Iran, a seasoned traveler advises on an essential detail to consider before embarking on a journey. Presently, the UK Foreign Office discourages non-essential travel to the United Arab Emirates and strongly suggests avoiding areas like Israel and Palestine.

In the midst of escalating tensions, triggered by US President Donald Trump’s threats against Iran’s South Pars gas field, travel expert Simon Calder opted for a route through Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s second-largest airport, on his way back to London from Jakarta.

Calder highlights a caution issued to UK travelers, advising against transiting through the UAE during long-haul flights. He explains, “I’ve paid just under £600 for a one-way flight from Jakarta via Abu Dhabi to London. The closest alternative route bypassing the Gulf region… cost about three times as much.”

However, he underscores one critical piece of information to keep in mind. Calder added, “It’s important to note that your insurance coverage, under a standard policy, may not apply while you are in this region due to the stipulation that coverage is void if you travel against Foreign Office advice.”

In response to recent military actions, including attacks on major airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, airlines have extended their flight cancellations to and from the UAE. Following an Iranian drone strike on DXB Airport causing a fire, several airlines have adjusted their schedules.

In a statement, Etihad Airways announced a restricted flight schedule between Abu Dhabi and key destinations, urging affected passengers to check for updates. The airline emphasized the need for confirmed bookings on specific flights before traveling to the airport.

Yasmine Farouk, reporting on the Gulf region for the International Crisis Group, highlights the symbolic importance of the targeted airports in the ongoing conflict. She notes that Iranian strikes aim to isolate countries, instilling panic and a sense of vulnerability in residents.

Despite the resilient air defenses in place, sporadic drone and missile penetrations have caused significant disruptions in the Gulf nations. Travelers are advised to stay informed and check for updates if planning to travel to or through Abu Dhabi.

British Airways recently announced the suspension of flights to Dubai until summer, citing regional uncertainties and airspace instability. Meanwhile, Emirates continues its services to Dubai, with reports indicating decreased passenger loads and reduced flight frequencies compared to pre-conflict levels.

Dubai authorities confirmed deploying air defenses against potential threats, reassuring the public of successful interception operations. Amidst the tensions, former football manager Sam Allardyce found himself stranded in Dubai, expressing relief upon returning to Manchester amid the escalating situation in the Middle East.
