Iranian attacks on Qatari gas facilities have raised concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to statements made by Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister expressed condemnation for the assaults following an emergency Cobra meeting to address the worsening situation in the region. Discussions during the meeting at Downing Street focused on potential domestic repercussions of the conflict and the development of contingency plans.
In a post on X, Mr. Starmer strongly denounced the recent Iranian strike on a Qatari gas facility and emphasized the need for a swift resolution to the Middle East crisis in the interest of the British populace. The attacks by Tehran on oil and gas installations were in response to an Israeli strike on South Pars, a crucial Iranian gas field. US President Donald Trump disavowed knowledge of the Israeli strike but issued threats of significant retaliation against Iran’s gas field.
Regarding the Cobra meeting held on Thursday, an official spokesman for Mr. Starmer refrained from divulging specific details but reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the cost of living crisis and reducing energy bills. The spokesman highlighted upcoming reductions in energy costs scheduled for April as a result of measures taken in the Budget.
The Prime Minister also engaged in discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday. The leaders deliberated on the situation in the Middle East, particularly the Iranian attacks on Qatari energy facilities, which were deemed destabilizing. They emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the freedom of navigation for shipping. Collaboration on a viable plan among partners was deemed essential, with a commitment from the leaders to continue their dialogue in the near future.
