A former Wall Street financier made a surprising find in a coal mine he purchased for £1.5 million, potentially valuing at a staggering £28 billion. Randall Atkins acquired an old Wyoming coal mine for $2 million with modest return expectations, but the reality turned out to be much more fruitful.
Government researchers assessed the site and uncovered a significant reserve of rare-earth elements (REE), making it one of the largest deposits in the US, estimated to be worth $37 billion (£28 billion). The Brook Mine, as revealed in May 2023, contained rare-earth metals like neodymium, dysprosium, terbium, and praseodymium crucial for technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles. This unexpected discovery also included minerals like gallium and germanium essential for semiconductors and missile systems.
Speaking at the mine’s grand opening in November 2025, Randall expressed excitement about the potential to supply rare earths for the next century, claiming to possess North America’s largest unconventional rare-earth deposit.
Rare earths are highly valuable critical minerals vital for industries like defense, automotive, and electronics, playing a significant role in global trade dynamics. China, the world’s largest producer of rare earths, has a significant market share, prompting the US to seek alternative sources to reduce dependence. Efforts by the US to secure rare earth supplies have been a strategic priority, with discussions of potential mining agreements in various regions.
Despite the promising outlook, the Brook Mine faced criticism from an investor watchdog group, which accused the mine of fraudulent activities. In contrast, a recent report highlighted an Australian rare earths miner securing a substantial deal with the US Department of War for rare earth oxide products.
The deal signifies the importance of rare earths for modern manufacturing, with both parties looking forward to a mutually beneficial agreement. This development underscores the critical role rare earth minerals play in global supply chains and national security strategies.
