Born in Sri Lanka, Dilly was adopted in 1983 by an English mother named Freda and a Sri Lankan father named Deya, who passed away due to dementia at the age of 79 in 2010. Recounting her early years, Dilly shared her journey from being abandoned in a Sri Lankan orphanage as a baby to being rescued by her adoptive parents at the age of three. Growing up in Middlesex, she expressed gratitude towards Freda, the driving force behind her adoption, for shaping her life positively.

In a candid interview with Adoption UK, Dilly reflected on her upbringing, describing her relationship with her parents as functional and filled with love, despite limited quality time spent together. Beyond the spotlight, Dilly is happily married to Charley, a painter and decorator involved in building TV sets. The couple exchanged vows in a picturesque Bali ceremony in 2012 and welcomed their daughter, Nelly-Reet, a year later.

Dilly shared a poignant account of her relationship journey with Charley, highlighting pivotal moments of risk-taking and personal growth. She emphasized the significant life changes she embraced after turning 30, including relocating to Chicago to be with Charley and embarking on a transformative journey that eventually led them back to Hertfordshire, where they settled down.

In 2023, Dilly disclosed her diagnosis of stage one womb cancer following surgery to remove uterine fibroids. She underwent a lengthy surgery to eradicate the tumor successfully. During a television appearance in February 2025, Dilly bravely discussed the challenges of battling cancer while filming Sort Your Life Out, emphasizing the importance of focusing on recovery amidst health struggles.

Despite facing adversity, Dilly maintained a resilient spirit throughout her cancer journey, balancing work commitments with treatment. She acknowledged the emotional complexities of survivorship, expressing gratitude for the support received while navigating the tough phases of her health ordeal.
