Mother’s persistence uncovers teen’s leukemia misdiagnosis

A teenager’s severe back pain and decreased appetite were initially misdiagnosed by a doctor until his mother insisted on a blood test, which revealed leukemia instead of a viral infection.

The 16-year-old, Kit Chester-Canavan, started experiencing intermittent back pain in April and sought medical help after a bike accident exacerbated the discomfort. Despite being initially told it was a common musculoskeletal issue, Kit’s persistent pain and significant weight loss prompted further investigation.

Upon his mother’s insistence, a blood test was conducted, showing dangerously high levels of inflammation. Kit was then diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B Type) on November 28, 2025. He has since commenced a rigorous treatment regimen at University College Hospital London (UCLH) involving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and bone marrow evaluations expected to extend over two years.

To support Kit’s aspirations and raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust, his mother, Amanda, initiated a fundraising campaign. Kit, a soccer enthusiast previously in good health, expressed his shock at the diagnosis but remains resolute in his battle against the disease.

Throughout his treatment, Kit has remained positive, looking forward to his recovery and future plans, including a trip through Asia and a bungee jump in New Zealand. Despite the challenges of his illness, Kit remains grateful for the support from his loved ones, friends, and charitable organizations like the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Amanda emphasized the difficulties faced by Kit and their family, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the illness’s cause. Despite the hardships, she admires Kit’s resilience and positivity, which serve as sources of strength during his treatment journey.

The family remains optimistic about Kit’s future and aims to provide him with goals and support throughout his treatment. Despite the obstacles ahead, Kit’s determination and courage shine through, inspiring those around him and fostering hope for a brighter tomorrow.
