“Parents Plead Guilty to Daughter’s Tragic Neglect Demise”

In a tragic incident, a woman was found deceased in a severely emaciated condition, weighing only five stone, at her parents’ residence. During a sentencing hearing at Mold Crown Court, it was revealed that Steffie Davies, aged 32, had passed away some time before being discovered.

The mother, Bernita Davies, aged 60, and the father, Alan Davies, aged 59, pleaded guilty to the charges of allowing or causing the death of their vulnerable adult daughter between May 26, 2022, and May 26, 2023.

According to Andrew Jones KC, the prosecutor, ambulance personnel found the woman in a state of extreme emaciation and coldness on May 26, 2023, in her bed at the Bluebell estate in Wrexham. It was evident that she had been neglected and left to perish, indicating a failure on the part of her parents to fulfill their caregiving responsibilities.

Describing the scene as appalling, Mr. Jones highlighted the deplorable conditions in which the woman was kept, mirroring the state of neglect she endured. Bernita Davies claimed to have found her daughter deceased in bed before calling emergency services, but medical examination revealed that she had been in an ulcerated state for an extended period, with the presence of lice in her hair.

During the court proceedings, Home Office pathologist Dr. Johnson disclosed that at the time of her death, Ms. Davies weighed a mere 36kg and succumbed to sepsis and severe malnutrition. The pathologist estimated that her condition had persisted for over six weeks.

The victim’s sister accused their parents of neglecting her until she faded away, questioning their inaction as her health deteriorated. Representing Bernita Davies, Maria Masselis expressed her client’s deep remorse and sense of inadequacy for failing to care for her daughter adequately.

Simon Rogers, representing Alan Davies, stated that his client was genuinely remorseful and undergoing treatment for bladder cancer, emphasizing his low risk of repeating such offenses. The sentencing for the parents was postponed by Judge Mary Stacey to March 19, describing the case as challenging and unconventional.
