“UK Implements Contingency Plans Amid Rising Fuel Shortage Concerns”

Amid concerns over potential fuel shortages, contingency plans are in place to implement reduced speed limits and petrol rationing. These measures could prioritize fuel for emergency services to prevent supply depletion, particularly in light of the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Notably, a prominent expert, Nick Butler, has cautioned that prolonged conflict in Iran could lead the government to ration energy resources. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has significantly impacted oil exports from the Gulf, exacerbating supply concerns.

Butler emphasized the likelihood of a tangible supply shortage in the coming weeks, urging the government to prepare for a substantial shortfall over the next two months. He suggested that rationing may become necessary, drawing parallels to the critical role of oil and gas supplies in sustaining the economy.

The National Emergency Plan for Fuel, accessible on the gov.uk website, includes provisions like enforcing a 50mph speed limit on all roads as part of emergency measures. Despite the existence of these plans, the government reassured that UK petrol stations are adequately stocked.

Additionally, government spokespersons highlighted that the majority of crude oil refined in the UK is imported, with only a small fraction originating from the Middle East. The bulk of imports come from countries like the United States and Norway, with minor contributions from other suppliers. Authorities and organizations like the AA have advised drivers to maintain their usual refueling habits.

Meanwhile, the RAC reported a continuous increase in pump prices, with unleaded reaching an average of 142.62p per liter and diesel climbing to 162.66p. This price trend adds to concerns over potential fuel supply disruptions and the need for effective management of energy resources.
