“Former Horse Racing Work-Rider Banned for Horse Assault”

A former horse racing work-rider has been barred from the sport for assaulting a horse before a competition. Adam Howchin, while working for trainer William Knight, attacked Sugarloaf Lenny before a race at Nottingham on August 1, 2024, after blaming the horse for his fall. Surveillance footage captured Howchin using the rein to whip the horse’s hind legs, witnessed by another work-rider, Fred Rimell, who reported the incident.

Rimell described Howchin’s actions as aggressive, mentioning that Howchin was excessively hitting the horse and trying to force it to move forward. Howchin also made threats towards Rimell, including physical harm and harm to his parents, creating a tense situation at the stables.

Despite denying the allegations initially, Howchin stopped cooperating with the investigation and skipped the hearing. An independent disciplinary panel suspended him for eight months and imposed a £1,500 fine. Panel chair Tim Grey stated that it was likely Howchin had struck the horse and behaved abusively towards Rimell before and after the race.

Christina Courquin, representing the British Horse Racing (BHA), emphasized the gravity of Howchin’s actions, highlighting the distress and pain caused to the horse. She condemned his behavior as unacceptable for someone entrusted with the care and safety of the animals in the stable, emphasizing that threats of violence towards fellow racing participants are intolerable.
