A couple’s anticipated vacation to the Philippines turned into a nightmare when a scooter accident left them hospitalized with serious injuries. Daniel Guz, 49, and Julia Sek, 45, were looking forward to a two-week trip around the Philippines as a special celebration for Daniel’s upcoming 50th birthday in April.
The pair, hailing from St Ives, Cambridgeshire, had arranged flights and had their sights set on starting their journey on Palawan Island. Unfortunately, on March 5, just two days into their trip, disaster struck while they were exploring the town of El Nido on a scooter. The scooter skidded, causing them to slide over 50 meters off the road.
Daniel, a lorry driver, and Julia, a printer, were rushed to a hospital in Manila due to the severity of their injuries. Daniel suffered a ruptured spleen and broken leg and hip, while Julia sustained fractures in both arms. They are currently undergoing multiple surgeries and facing uncertainty about their return to the UK.
Reflecting on the accident, Daniel recounted the moment of losing control on the road due to sand or oil, which led to the unfortunate crash. Despite the ordeal, Daniel expressed gratitude for surviving and staying together with Julia, emphasizing the second chance they’ve been given.
Their original plans to explore El Nido’s picturesque landscapes were cut short by the unexpected turn of events. The accident occurred shortly after they set off on the scooter, encountering a slippery surface that caused the bike to veer off the road.
Local residents and Filipino soldiers rushed to assist the couple after the accident, with the couple narrowly avoiding a more catastrophic collision with an electricity post. Both Daniel and Julia suffered significant injuries, requiring multiple transfers between local hospitals until they were eventually taken to St Luke’s Medical Center for further treatment.
While their medical expenses are covered by insurance, the couple will need additional private physiotherapy and ongoing care upon their return to the UK. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by their friend, Monika, to support their rehabilitation process.
Daniel, known for his charitable endeavors back home, acknowledged the challenges ahead, including potential delays in their return to work and the necessity for extended physiotherapy. They are in communication with the Polish Ambassador to facilitate their repatriation to the UK.
