A mother shared the harrowing experience of her daughter falling ill and being hospitalized after a visit to a nightclub implicated in a significant meningitis outbreak. Khali Goodwin recounted how her daughter Keeleigh, 22, battled headaches, nausea, and fatigue, ultimately being admitted to a hospital in Canterbury, Kent, following the outbreak linked to Club Chemistry.
Keeleigh, a resident and worker in Canterbury, initially mistook her symptoms for Covid after the nightclub visit but woke up to missed calls, including one from the hospital. Tragically, the meningitis outbreak has claimed the lives of two individuals, including a 21-year-old student and an 18-year-old sixth form student. Over a dozen others, including Keeleigh, have been hospitalized due to the outbreak.
Khali recalled advising her daughter to rest and sleep off her illness, assuming it was a common ailment like Covid. However, Keeleigh’s condition worsened, reporting symptoms like extreme temperature changes, sickness, and headaches. Notably, she mentioned a telltale sign of meningitis—a stiff and painful neck.
Despite believing Keeleigh would recover by resting, Khali woke up to alarming news the next morning. Her daughter had suffered a seizure, fallen, and hit her head, necessitating emergency medical attention. Being 22, Keeleigh was too old to have received the meningitis B vaccine, which is typically administered to infants.
Currently, Keeleigh remains in the hospital under isolation as she recovers from the infection, showing signs of improvement such as stabilized temperature and blood pressure, though she continues to battle a persistent headache. Khali expressed relief at her daughter’s survival and ongoing recovery.
Khali issued a cautionary message to other parents, urging them to trust their instincts and seek medical advice promptly if they suspect their child may be unwell with meningitis. She emphasized the importance of immediate action and vigilance in such situations.
