Parents in Kent are being alerted to check their children’s meningitis vaccination status following an outbreak of meningococcal disease. The UK Health Security Agency has confirmed four laboratory cases and is investigating 11 more, bringing the total to 15. Sadly, an 18-year-old student and a 21-year-old university student have died from the illness, with all cases requiring hospitalization.
The agency has warned that the situation is rapidly changing, and more cases may arise as individuals with symptoms are advised to seek medical help. Those who visited Club Chemistry in Canterbury on specific dates are urged to get precautionary antibiotics. MenB, a common cause of meningitis in the UK, only began routine vaccinations in 2015, leaving many students and young adults unprotected. Parents can check their child’s vaccination status using the NHS app or by referring to the immunizations section of their Red Book.
The MenB vaccine is recommended for babies at eight and 12 weeks, with a booster at one year. Additionally, a MenACWY vaccine is available to protect against various bacteria causing meningitis and is given to teenagers at age 14. Individuals who missed this vaccine in school can still get it for free before turning 25.
