“Duchess of Cambridge Continues St. Patrick’s Day Tradition”

The Duchess of Cambridge marked St. Patrick’s Day with a longstanding tradition in her royal schedule. She visited Mons Barracks to distribute traditional shamrocks to the Irish Guards in celebration of the day. Dressed in green attire, she handed out shamrocks to officers and guardsmen, continuing the custom as the regiment’s colonel. Additionally, she bestowed a special shamrock to the Irish Wolf Hound Seamus, the regiment’s mascot. Following the parade, the Duchess presented long service and good conduct medals to soldiers and engaged with members of the Regimental Association and junior cadets. Later, she participated in official photographs with the Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess.

The Irish Guards fulfill a dual role as elite infantry soldiers and ceremonial protectors of the Monarch, often stationed at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. After supporting Ukrainian Armed forces training, the Irish Guards are now focused on modernization and enhancing operational capabilities, particularly in drone warfare for the UK.

Last year, the Duchess emotionally returned to the St. Patrick’s Day parade after missing it in 2024 due to health reasons. In a gesture of appreciation, she also treated the regiment to drinks. Appointed as the Colonel of the Irish Guards in December 2023, the Duchess has not worn military attire at events like Trooping the Colour but has participated in a carriage instead.
