“Drifting Russian Ghost Ship Sparks Environmental Crisis”

Malta, a popular tourist destination, is facing a significant environmental crisis. A burnt Russian ghost vessel, the Arctic Metagaz, is adrift without a crew about 50 nautical miles southwest of the island, following an attack by Ukrainian drones. Concerns have been raised by multiple European countries about the potential ecological threat posed by the damaged ship and its specialized cargo.

Russia has accused Ukraine of using unmanned sea drones to target the Metagaz in the Mediterranean Sea. The vessel, part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” was sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for bypassing Western restrictions. The ship, carrying gas, heavy oil, and diesel fuel, is being closely monitored by authorities in Malta and Italy due to fears of pollution.

WWF Italy has warned that a spill from the vessel could lead to fires, cryogenic clouds harmful to marine life, and widespread pollution. Salvage experts are on standby in Malta, preparing for the ship’s arrival, while a specialized vessel is en route to the scene. Initial reports suggested the ship sank after explosions, but Maltese authorities rescued the crew who were found safe in a lifeboat.

Despite reports of the ship sinking, the wreck remains afloat according to Maltese transport authorities. Russia has indicated its involvement in resolving the situation will depend on specific circumstances to avoid undermining EU sanctions. The ship, carrying various fuels and natural gas, has no crew onboard, raising concerns about a potential environmental disaster.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova emphasized the responsibility of coastal countries in preventing an environmental catastrophe. The ongoing situation with the drifting vessel and the risk of an environmental disaster require careful handling to prevent further harm to the region’s ecology.
