A woman took advantage of her family members by stealing money from her father and grandmother while her mother was in the hospital. Sarah Schofield embezzled over £14,000 from her relatives over several years to fuel her gambling addiction. Her father, devastated by her deceitful actions, referred to her as a “manipulative thief” due to the calculated and deceptive nature of her behavior.
Despite the gravity of her crimes, Schofield avoided immediate imprisonment to care for her children, with the judge granting her a final opportunity to reform. The Liverpool Crown Court revealed that Schofield obtained the stolen funds through a prolonged fraud scheme spanning nearly three years, from 2017 to 2020. She even accessed her grandmother’s Post Office account, taking £5,060 by using her bank card without authorization.
Prosecutor James Rae detailed how Schofield impersonated her father to secure a loan and set up a fraudulent bank account to receive the funds. She also siphoned money from her grandmother’s Lloyds TSB account, betraying the trust of her family members. Schofield’s father expressed shock and disappointment at her actions, highlighting the emotional toll her betrayal had taken on him.
Additionally, Schofield’s sister conveyed their grandmother’s deep sense of betrayal and exploitation, emphasizing the familial discord caused by Schofield’s actions. Despite being a first-time offender, Schofield received a suspended two-year prison sentence and other penalties. The judge admonished her for the calculated nature of her offenses and the breach of trust towards her loved ones.
Schofield’s defense counsel highlighted her remorse and the significant impact a custodial sentence would have on her children, particularly her son with special needs. The court recognized her efforts to address her addiction and mental health issues, leading to a decision to spare her immediate imprisonment.
