Public health officials have issued an urgent update regarding a meningitis outbreak. The UK Health Security Agency has advised individuals who were at Club Chemistry in Canterbury on March 5, 6, or 7 to seek preventive antibiotic treatment as a precautionary measure. This announcement follows a meningitis outbreak in Kent, where 13 cases have been confirmed, including two fatalities. The University of Kent has provided guidance to 16,000 staff and students.
The agency highlighted that meningococcal disease can progress rapidly, with symptoms such as fever, headache, rapid breathing, drowsiness, shivering, vomiting, and cold extremities. Additionally, septicaemia may manifest as a rash that does not disappear when pressed with a glass. Early signs can be mistaken for other illnesses like a common cold or flu, making it crucial for students to be vigilant. Prompt medical attention is advised if any of these symptoms appear, by contacting a GP, NHS 111, or emergency services.
Trish Mannes, the UK Health Security Agency’s regional deputy director for the South East, expressed condolences to those affected and emphasized the importance of seeking preventative antibiotic treatment for individuals who visited Club Chemistry between March 5 and 7. The UKHSA promptly responded to the cluster of cases upon notification and initiated communication with at-risk individuals.
