“Expatriates in Iraq Face Threat from Tehran-Affiliated Groups”

Western expatriate workers, military and diplomatic personnel, and foreign individuals employed in Iraq, along with any local residents aiding them, are facing threats from Tehran-affiliated terrorist groups as tensions in the Iran conflict rise.

A proxy organization linked to Iran in a neighboring country has announced a reward of 150 million Iraqi dinars or approximately £100,000 for any information leading to the capture and subsequent elimination of a foreign national, with the danger extending throughout the Middle East.

This alarming offer aims to “tighten the noose on Americans on the ground” and promises “field neutralization” of victims, indicating a serious risk not only to Americans but also to all Westerners, potentially expanding beyond Iraq. Reports suggest that a former employee of a Western oil company in southern Iraq disclosed sensitive information about Westerners to pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, seeking advantage in the ongoing conflict.

There are concerns that the terrorist threat will not be limited to Iraq but may encompass all foreigners in conflict zones across the broader Middle East. The online call for “foreigners wanted” has evoked memories of past turmoil in Iraq, marked by frequent abductions and killings.

The current situation echoes past events that led to the emergence of extremist groups like Al-Qaeda in Iraq and later the Islamic State, with the Islamic Resistance of Iraq, a Shia faction, now posing a threat of violence and abductions in response to the U.S.-Israel military actions against Iran.

Recent intelligence reports highlight a heightened risk of kidnappings and detentions targeting U.S.-affiliated individuals but potentially affecting all Western personnel operating in Iraq and the wider Middle Eastern region. The communication from the Islamic Resistance in Iraq offers a substantial monetary reward to encourage identification and reporting of individuals associated with U.S. military or intelligence operations in the region, raising concerns about the safety of foreign personnel and their local contacts.

As diplomatic tensions escalate, Iran’s foreign minister has emphasized the country’s readiness for a prolonged conflict, with ongoing military actions causing damage in various cities. Israel remains active in targeting Iranian locations, while Tehran has threatened disruptions to vital shipping routes.

In the midst of these developments, Israel has also engaged in military actions against Lebanon, resulting in casualties on both sides. With support from Russia and China, Tehran is bolstering its defenses against external pressures. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for NATO involvement in securing critical waterways like the Strait of Hormuz amid the escalating conflict.
