“Nightclub Outbreak in Kent: Cautionary Tale”

A mother issued a cautionary tale following her daughter’s hospitalization due to meningitis shortly after a night out at a nightclub in Kent. Club Chemistry, a popular student hangout, has been linked to several cases of a viral outbreak resulting in two fatalities and 11 hospitalizations. Casey Marlow attended a Spring Fling event at the Canterbury club, where her health rapidly deteriorated, experiencing symptoms like a sore throat initially dismissed as minor. The 19-year-old was admitted to the hospital and placed in isolation to combat the potentially fatal infection.

Emma Marlow, the concerned mother from Ashford, recounted how her daughter’s condition worsened with a high fever, stiff neck, and severe headache post the nightclub outing. Despite the alarming symptoms, Casey is expected to fully recover with the aid of antibiotics while receiving care in isolation. Emma emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and seeking medical attention promptly for anyone feeling unwell in the vicinity.

In response to the situation, UKHSA contacted Emma to identify individuals who may have come into contact with her daughter, an employee at a Five Guys restaurant. Club Chemistry’s owner, Louise Jones-Roberts, acknowledged the collaboration with UKHSA to trace potentially impacted individuals, although challenges may arise in the process. The tragic loss of a student named Juliette and another individual affiliated with the University of Kent underscored the severity of the outbreak, prompting a mass distribution of advice letters to 16,000 students on recognizing symptoms and accessing necessary antibiotics if needed.
