“Lost Medieval City of Stolzenberg Unearthed in Polish Forest”

Archaeologists have unearthed a medieval city that had disappeared without a trace centuries ago, now found hidden in a dense forest like a “time capsule.”

The discovery is believed to be the ancient city of Stolzenberg, a European settlement from the 14th or 15th centuries that mysteriously collapsed. Located near the modern village of Sławoborze in Poland, the city’s existence was confirmed through new findings and magnetic anomalies.

Researchers utilized historical sources to pinpoint the town’s location on the borders of Pomerania and Neumark, an area historically disputed between Germany and Poland. The town of Stolzenberg had been claimed by both nations.

Exploration in the forest area revealed massive earthen ramparts and an 18-foot-deep moat, with geophysical surveys supporting the identification of these ruins as belonging to Stolzenberg. Magnetic anomalies led to the detection of building remnants surrounding the city’s central square, typical of medieval towns under German law.

Among the artifacts discovered, approximately 400 in total, were remnants dating back to the Bronze Age and as recent as World War Two. The presence of medieval artifacts confirmed the town’s historical use, dispelling any doubts about its existence.

Despite the strong evidence, the archaeologists view this discovery as just the beginning of their exploration. They believe the site might have been the original location of a town that later underwent relocation.

According to archaeologist Marcin Krzepkowski, this site holds many mysteries that will aid in understanding the settlement and city-forming processes in this region of Europe. The town’s early fall and incomplete development make it a valuable time capsule waiting to reveal its secrets.
