Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ Segment Sparks Controversy

This year’s Oscars ‘in memoriam’ segment paid tribute to several late film stars but omitted notable names like Brigitte Bardot, James Van Der Beek, and Eric Dane. The awards ceremony honored departed luminaries with heartfelt messages, starting with Billy Crystal remembering his late friend Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. Following this, Rachel McAdams paid tribute to Catherine O’Hara and Diane Keaton, while Barbra Streisand delivered a musical homage to Robert Redford. The montage also featured stars such as Claudia Cardinale, Robert Duvall, and Val Kilmer, but many renowned figures were conspicuously absent.

Brigitte Bardot, a celebrated actress who passed away in December 2025 at the age of 91, was notably excluded from the memorial. Bardot, known for her controversial views on various topics, including interracial marriage and the Me Too Movement, was met with boos and accusations of racism at the Cesar Awards in France where she was remembered posthumously.

Additionally, James Van Der Beek, a versatile actor known for his roles in both television and film, and Eric Dane, recognized for his part in the X-Men movies, were not acknowledged in the tribute. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, an actor known for his role in The Tuskegee Airmen, also did not make the list after his untimely death while surfing in Costa Rica. Several other actors like June Lockhart, Bud Cort, George Wendt, Julian McMahon, James Ransone, Loretta Swit, Demond Wilson, Dharmendra, and Prunella Scales were also left out of the remembrance.

The absence of these stars sparked disappointment among fans, with many expressing their discontent over the oversight. This is not the first time the Oscars have overlooked significant names in their ‘in memoriam’ tributes, as past ceremonies have also missed honoring prominent figures like Michelle Trachtenberg, Chance Perdomo, Alain Delon, Tony Todd, and Olivia Hussey.
