A 16-year-old girl sadly found her mother deceased in bed, just four months after her father passed away from severe pneumonia. Tracey McGrann, a 54-year-old mother of three from Birkenhead, was discovered lifeless in bed following a night out in May 2024. She had visited her local health center after experiencing chest pain symptoms and was advised to go to the emergency department immediately, despite not showing any symptoms at the time. Tracey underwent an ECG and was discharged from the hospital, but later, it was revealed that the test had detected an abnormality that was not addressed.
Tragically, on the morning of May 26, 2024, Tracey’s daughter, Alisha, found her mother dead in bed. Leah, Tracey’s 25-year-old daughter, had to take custody of her devastated teenage sister and relocate to her mother’s home to care for her, along with her own young children. Leah expressed the challenges this sudden responsibility had brought into her life but emphasized the importance of moving forward despite the grief.
An inquest later concluded that Tracey’s death was due to ischaemic heart disease. Leah discovered a photo of the ECG examination that was taken on the day Tracey visited the hospital, showing an abnormality that was not acted upon. Following this revelation, Leah initiated legal action against the hospital trust overseeing Arrowe Park Hospital.
The family’s legal representative highlighted the preventable nature of Tracey’s misdiagnosis and subsequent tragic outcome. They emphasized the need for lessons to be learned from such cases to prevent similar incidents in the future. The hospital trust responded by stating that patient safety is their top priority and that they investigate incidents rigorously to ensure learning and improvement in their services.
Recent data revealed a significant increase in misdiagnosis-related medical negligence claims against NHS trusts in England, with substantial settlements made over the past six years. The financial burden of these claims has been substantial, indicating the importance of addressing issues related to misdiagnosis and patient care within the healthcare system.
