Ministers are contemplating the possibility of canceling a scheduled increase in fuel duty due to the escalating energy costs stemming from the conflict in the Middle East, as suggested by Ed Miliband.
The Energy Secretary was questioned about the potential reversal of plans to end the 16-year fuel duty freeze in September in light of the surging oil prices.
In response, Mr. Miliband expressed uncertainty about the duration of the conflict and indicated that a decision on the fuel duty freeze would be contingent on the evolving situation leading up to September.

The package also involves moving up the next annual renewables auction to July, following the successful offshore wind procurement in the previous auction round.
Additionally, targeted aid for low-income households dependent on heating oil is set to be announced, aiming to alleviate the burden of fuel poverty in rural areas.
In a recent interview, Chancellor Rachel Reeves revealed plans to provide enhanced support for individuals not covered by Ofgem’s price cap, ensuring assistance for those most in need.
Energy bills are currently shielded by Ofgem’s fixed price cap until June, but prolonged conflict and disruptions in oil shipping could lead to substantial bill increases for households.
Analysts have projected a potential 10% rise in household energy bills by July due to significant increases in wholesale gas prices, impacting the Ofgem price cap for the upcoming months.
