The interception of missiles in the skies above the UAE has prompted many pet owners to hastily flee, leaving their animals behind. Consequently, shelters are inundated with a distressing increase in pets found roaming the streets or left at their facilities.
An UAE sanctuary disclosed that they have reached full capacity, with most rescues consisting of abandoned pets found wandering aimlessly.
Anso Stander, the founder of Six Hounds Animal Sanctuary in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, highlighted a concerning rise in stray animals, attributing it to owners surrendering or abandoning their pets amid the current regional uncertainties.
Due to limited airline services, pet owners are facing challenges in transporting their animals, resulting in heartbreaking decisions to give up their pets. Financial constraints, high veterinary costs, and logistical issues related to pet relocation services are cited as common reasons for abandoning animals.
Anso, originally from South Africa, shared the overwhelming requests she receives to shelter cats and dogs, including instances where individuals threaten to leave their pets if not accommodated.
The shelter founder emphasized the urgent need for support to care for the increasing number of animals, mentioning the necessity of funding for emergency facilities, staff, food, and veterinary expenses.
Regrettably, some veterinarians have had to euthanize healthy pets due to owners unwilling to cover relocation costs, while some pets have faced tragic outcomes such as being abandoned or shot.
Appealing for assistance, Anso emphasized the importance of rehoming animals and the challenges faced in the absence of sufficient funds and community support.

In a controversial incident, an influencer faced backlash for leaving her pet dog behind while relocating from Dubai to Mauritius amid security concerns. The influencer defended her actions, stating that her family’s trip was a temporary vacation and not a permanent move.
Despite criticisms, the influencer maintained that her dog was a cherished part of the family and assured that arrangements were made for the pet’s care during their absence.
