Iran has issued a concerning threat targeting a key ally of the UK. The regime has labeled Ukraine as a “legitimate target” due to its alleged support for Israel. Ukraine, under President Volodymyr Zelensky, has offered assistance to nations facing threats in the Middle East conflict, particularly in drone defense. Zelensky mentioned that numerous countries have sought Ukraine’s expertise in countering Shahed-type drones amid Iran’s military actions.
Ebrahim Azizi, the head of Iran’s parliamentary National Security Commission, has accused Ukraine of supporting Israel, making it a justifiable target under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
Ukraine has developed proficiency in drone defense, stemming from its ongoing conflict with Russia. Over the past four years, Russia has launched more than 57,000 Shahed drones towards Ukraine, according to the Ukraine Foreign Ministry. In response to joint US-Israeli attacks, Iran has retaliated by deploying similar drones in the Middle East.
Zelensky highlighted the cost disparity between Patriot air defense missiles and Shahed drones, emphasizing the affordability and effectiveness of the latter. Ukraine has also made advancements in cost-effective drone defense technology, potentially leading to collaboration with American officials in drone production.
Recently, Zelensky revealed that multiple countries, including the United States, have sought Ukraine’s assistance in defending against Iranian drones. He mentioned discussions with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait regarding potential cooperation.
Ukraine is willing to support in countering Iranian drones as long as it does not compromise its own defenses and contributes to diplomatic efforts against the Russian invasion. Zelensky emphasized the principle of reciprocation in defense cooperation, stating that Ukraine assists those who support its quest for a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Russia.
