Leonardo DiCaprio Opens Up About Quietly Battling OCD

Leonardo DiCaprio, known for his iconic roles in blockbuster movies like Titanic, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Inception, has been dealing with a challenging health condition for many years. Despite his successful film career that has grossed over £5.5 billion worldwide and earned him prestigious awards, including an Oscar, the 51-year-old actor has quietly battled obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) for an extended period.

OCD is characterized by obsessions, emotions, and compulsions, as stated by the NHS. Obsessive thoughts trigger anxiety and the urge to perform certain actions, creating a cycle of temporary relief followed by recurring distress. Leonardo has struggled with specific compulsions, such as avoiding stepping on cracks or gum stains, which have sometimes caused delays on film sets.

While OCD has presented challenges in his personal life, Leonardo has channeled his experiences authentically into his acting, notably portraying characters like Howard Hughes in The Aviator. Despite the difficulties, he has maintained a determined attitude not to let OCD control his life.

Approximately one in 50 individuals experiences OCD at some point in their lives, with causes still not entirely understood but believed to involve factors like stress, genetics, and changes in brain chemistry. The NHS emphasizes that persistent, intrusive thoughts that disrupt normal thinking patterns may indicate an obsession.
