The third round of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass faced a delayed start due to an incident involving a double murder suspect entering the PGA Tour course. Local authorities in St. Johns County responded to a shooting at a Ponte Vedra Walgreens, resulting in two fatalities. The suspect, identified as Christian Barrios, was tracked onto the golf course by sniffer dogs. Barrios had interactions with PGA staff before fleeing the area and crashing a stolen BMW.
As a result of these events, the Players Championship adjusted its opening time at TPC Sawgrass. The gates opened later than usual at 9 a.m. ET for the third round, with tee times remaining unchanged. On-course hospitality venues started operations at 11 a.m. ET.
Away from the disturbance, Ludvig Aberg leads the Players Championship leaderboard with a remarkable 63 on Friday. Xander Schauffele trails in second place, while Cam Young holds the third position. Reigning champion Rory McIlroy and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler are facing challenges entering the weekend rounds. The tournament remains competitive with several players in contention at five-under-par and above.
