Twins Lori and George Schappell, connected at the head and sharing 30 percent of their brains, lived with a remarkable secret. Despite medical expectations, they surpassed the age of 30, setting a Guinness World Record as the oldest living conjoined twins in 2022.
Living conventional lives filled with personal interests and relationships, George concealed a significant truth from Lori. Originally designated as female at birth, George, formerly known as Dori, publicly embraced his true gender identity as a trans man named David in 2007.
Having acknowledged his male identity since childhood, George disclosed his feelings to Lori in 2010, expressing his desire to live authentically. Despite the initial shock, Lori swiftly embraced and supported her brother’s decision, emphasizing their unbreakable bond and resilience.
Despite their unique physical connection, the twins pursued individual passions, with Lori excelling in ten-pin bowling and George showcasing his talents as a country singer. Leading relatively ordinary lives, they maintained separate identities within their shared existence.
Having relocated to their own two-bedroom flat at 21, the twins alternated sleeping arrangements between rooms personalized to reflect their individual tastes. George’s room featured music memorabilia, while Lori’s exuded a feminine touch, harmonizing with her personality.
Born in Pennsylvania in 1961, the twins lived harmoniously until their passing at the age of 62 on April 7, 2024. In a documentary from 1997, when asked about the possibility of separation, George firmly rejected the idea, stating, “Why fix what is not broken?”
