“Nigel Farage’s £27,800 US Speaking Fee Draws Criticism”

Nigel Farage received a payment of £27,800 for speaking at an anti-climate think tank in the US, closely associated with Donald Trump. Despite his intention to meet with the president at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, the encounter did not occur. Farage has garnered nearly £1.4 million in payments from external sources since his election. The Reform UK leader addressed the Club for Growth, a conservative lobby group in Washington DC, known for supporting President Trump and Republican candidates. The group’s president expressed alignment with Trump’s goals for the upcoming mid-term elections.

Farage’s recent speaking engagement in the US, disclosed in the financial interests register, highlighted his involvement with a group that significantly fundraised for Republican candidates in the last election. Criticism has been directed at Farage for his limited presence in his Clacton constituency, with accusations of prioritizing international engagements over local responsibilities. Various figures have criticized Farage for his association with right-wing groups close to Trump and his lucrative overseas speaking engagements.

Despite earning more than his base MP salary through various sources, including media appearances and speaking engagements, Farage faced scrutiny for multiple breaches of parliamentary rules regarding late declaration of payments. While acknowledging the errors, Farage attributed the delays to the complexity of his financial interests and lack of technical expertise. Although acknowledged as the MP with the highest external earnings, no formal actions were taken against Farage for the late declarations.

Farage’s team defended his record, emphasizing his commitment to his constituency and charitable contributions. They highlighted his active role in parliament and success in national opinion polls, positioning Reform UK favorably for future elections. Local voters were encouraged to evaluate Farage’s performance based on his actions rather than media portrayals critical of his outside engagements.
