Television host Julia Bradbury has come to appreciate the importance of health after being diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago. Now 55 years old, she emphasizes self-care, including a healthy diet, regular exercise, meditation, and gratitude.
“I’ve really taken control of my health,” explains the presenter, who was born in Dublin. “I want to ensure that I am proactive about my well-being rather than reactive to emergencies.”
In late 2021, Julia underwent a single mastectomy to remove a 6cm tumor. Despite maintaining a practical outlook, she admits to having emotional moments and even shedding tears during challenging times.
Julia’s current lifestyle focuses on spending time in nature and following a “clean eating” regimen. A decade ago, her hectic career filming travel documentaries worldwide led to irregular sleep patterns, excessive sugar consumption, and rushed meals. She has since transitioned to a healthier routine.
Now based in London with her long-time partner Gerard Cunningham, a property developer, and their three children, Julia’s diet includes steamed vegetables, fresh berries, and seeds, along with a daily goal of 10,000 steps. She made significant dietary changes, cutting out gluten and alcohol, and paying closer attention to her hormones and fiber intake under medical guidance.
Despite challenges, Julia, a mother of three, has faced disagreements with healthcare providers regarding her lifestyle modifications post-cancer diagnosis. She recounts instances where she felt dismissed by medical professionals, highlighting the importance of being proactive in health management.
Julia, who has been coping with endometriosis since 2006, underwent surgical treatment for the condition, resulting in a significant absence from work. She has partnered with Vista Health on the Signs Of Clarity initiative to raise awareness about recognizing bodily warning signs.
Receiving a pelvic MRI to monitor her endometriosis, Julia expressed relief at the results but emphasized the importance of regular health screenings. Growing older has brought her increased confidence to advocate for herself and address gender disparities in medical research.
Reflecting on her cancer journey, Julia acknowledges the transformative impact it had on her outlook on life. She remains grateful for every day and embraces new opportunities, such as her recent ITV series, Julia Bradbury’s Wonders Of The Frozen South.
