Envoi Allen tragically passed away following his participation in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Veterinary professionals rushed to his aid after he collapsed while returning to the stables.
This marks the third horse fatality at this year’s Festival, with Hansard and HMS Seahorse also succumbing, though after falls.
Cheveley Park Stud, the horse’s owners, had announced prior to the race that it would be the 12-year-old Envoi Allen’s final competitive outing before retirement. He ultimately finished ninth in the Gold Cup, the oldest contender in the race, trailing Harry Redknapp’s Jukebox Man. Gaelic Warrior emerged victorious as the joint-favorite, crossing the finish line eight lengths ahead of Jango Baie in second place, with Inothewayurthinkin coming in third.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Envoi Allen’s jockey Darragh O’Keeffe expressed his devastation, stating, “He was an exceptional and extraordinary horse who had a remarkable career. It’s heartbreaking how swiftly it all unfolded.”
Richard Thompson, representing the horse’s owners, recounted the distressing event, mentioning that despite initial signs of wellbeing after the race, Envoi Allen’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his sudden passing.
Gold Cup-winning jockey Andrew Thornton conveyed his sorrow on BBC Radio 5 Live at Cheltenham, describing Envoi Allen as a magnificent horse and highlighting his longstanding presence at the Festival.
John Hunt, the commentator, paid tribute to Envoi Allen, underscoring the horse’s widespread support throughout his illustrious career, which included multiple triumphs at the Cheltenham Festival and numerous grade one victories.
The Jockey Club, responsible for organizing the Cheltenham Festival, emphasized its ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures at events, noting substantial investments in equine welfare. Data provided by the Jockey Club indicated a decline in the rate of fallers in horse races over the past two decades, with recent enhancements aimed at minimizing risks and ensuring the welfare of horses.
Collaboration with prominent welfare organizations such as World Horse Welfare, RSPCA, and Blue Cross underscores the racing industry’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of care for racehorses.
