“Survey Reveals Cyclists Skipping Safety Gear and Ignorant of Bike Regulations”

A recent survey revealed that 50% of individuals who ride bicycles do not consistently wear helmets while cycling due to concerns about their image. These cyclists also confessed to disregarding the use of front and rear lights, as well as forgoing reflective clothing, despite legal requirements to have them when riding after dark. Additionally, a quarter of cyclists acknowledged their unawareness of the specific bike regulations outlined in the Highway Code.

The survey, conducted among 1,000 regular cyclists, highlighted that the primary reasons for avoiding helmets were short travel distances (31%) and a desire to maintain their hairstyle (13%).

Pippa Wibberley, the cycling director at Halfords, expressed concern over the findings, stating, “Many cyclists are overlooking safety precautions, often due to relatable reasons. Safety gear like helmets, lights, and reflective attire are vital for preventing serious injuries.”

Furthermore, the study revealed that a significant percentage of cyclists were unaware of the relevant sections in the Highway Code related to cycling, leading to misconceptions such as cycling on pavements until age 18 and avoiding bus lanes.

Alarmingly, a portion of cyclists admitted to engaging in risky behaviors like cycling under the influence of substances, despite it being illegal. The study also indicated a lack of awareness regarding the necessity of cycling proficiency tests and safety measures among cyclists.

Following accidents or near misses, 73% of cyclists reported a heightened focus on safety measures. Pippa Wibberley emphasized the importance of selecting appropriate safety gear and seeking guidance from knowledgeable store staff to ensure a safe and confident cycling experience.
