“Drugged Driver Gets 13 Years for Fatal Crash”

A reckless driver, driving under the influence of drugs at four times the legal limit, has been sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison for causing the deaths of his brother and 12-year-old nephew in a tragic car crash.

Michael Webb, 35, lost control of his vehicle, a Skoda Octavia, while trying to overtake a BMW at nearly double the speed limit. The car split in half upon colliding with a tree, resulting in the deaths of Webb’s brother, Peter Webb, 40, and his son, Ben.

During the court proceedings, Ashleigh Webb, Peter’s wife and Ben’s mother, emotionally expressed that no punishment could ever be sufficient, emphasizing that Michael’s driving had always posed a significant risk.

Ashleigh recounted the heartbreaking moment when police officers informed her of the accident involving her husband and son. She described the shock and devastation upon realizing that her son was also in the car at the time of the crash.

She criticized Michael for his reckless behavior, highlighting that he had put the lives of her loved ones in danger by driving irresponsibly. Ashleigh questioned the fear and suffering her son may have endured during the fatal incident.

Ashleigh shared her disappointment at not receiving an apology from Michael and condemned his lack of remorse, citing his online activities while on bail as evidence of his disregard for the consequences of his actions.

The court heard that Michael Webb was likely driving at approximately 73mph in a 40mph zone when the accident occurred on John Reid Road in South Shields. Witnesses reported his erratic and dangerous driving moments before the collision.

The judge, Tim Gittins, condemned Webb’s actions, stating that the tragic outcome was entirely preventable if he had not been behind the wheel. Webb was banned from driving for over 15 years and ordered to retake an extended driving test before regaining his license.

The judge emphasized the severity of the situation, labeling it as an avoidable tragedy caused by Webb’s reckless driving behavior.
