Firefighters are currently battling a significant fire outbreak in a village. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to a distress call concerning a “large fire” on Peck Lane in Gunthorpe at 9:42 am. The fire originated in a barn and has since spread to an adjacent cottage, as confirmed by a fire service representative. Presently, fourteen fire vehicles are on site to manage the situation.
Authorities have urged the public to steer clear of the area and to secure their homes by keeping windows and doors shut due to the rapid movement of the smoke plume caused by strong winds.
Two acquaintances, Jamie and Matty, who were in Gunthorpe for a leisurely walk, shared their observations with journalist Louis Corbett. They expressed concern over the severity of the situation, initially mistaking the fire for a routine farmer’s bonfire. The duo, who had been hiking for about an hour, voiced hope for the safety of individuals in the vicinity.
A correspondent from Nottinghamshire Live, a regional publication affiliated with our organization, has arrived at the scene and reported detecting the smoke emanating from the barn fire from a considerable distance away.
According to Louis Corbett, the visible smoke is emerging from a cluster of trees near the barn, where numerous fire engines are stationed. Additionally, three incident response ambulances have been spotted close to the site on Pick Lane. The smoke is dispersing across fields due to the high winds prevailing in the area.
A spokesperson from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed the deployment of 14 firefighting units, including the Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) and the Rural Vehicle, to manage the ongoing situation. Efforts to extinguish the fire are underway, with authorities anticipating a prolonged presence at the scene.
The fire service has issued a public advisory stating, “We are presently engaged in managing a substantial fire on Peck Lane, Gunthorpe. Emergency services are heavily concentrated in the area, leading to restricted road access. We urge the public to stay away from the vicinity during our operations. If you notice or smell smoke, please ensure your residence is sealed off, as the smoke plume is swiftly spreading due to the high winds.”
