An easyJet flight encountered a mid-air emergency over the UK. The flight bound for Edinburgh Airport had to change course to Manchester Airport due to strong winds. Departing from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at around 6:15 am on Thursday, Flight EJU7835 was scheduled to reach Edinburgh at approximately 7:50 am. However, multiple landing attempts were unsuccessful, prompting the diversion as reported by the Daily Record.
Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 displayed the aircraft making a landing attempt at Edinburgh Airport before executing a ‘go-around’ maneuver. Subsequently, the plane altered its route southwest towards Manchester and activated an emergency protocol known as squawking 7700.
Squawking 7700 indicates a general emergency situation onboard, encompassing various scenarios such as technical or medical issues. This procedure enables air traffic controllers and ground personnel to respond promptly to the emergency.
The flight successfully landed at Manchester Airport around 8:20 am. EasyJet confirmed that the winds at Edinburgh exceeded safe operating limits for the aircraft. The airline has organized coach transfers for the passengers back to Edinburgh.
Currently, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds reaching up to 70 mph in various regions of Scotland. Forecasters predict gusts of 50-55 mph across widespread areas, with potential speeds of 60-70 mph in coastal zones and areas near elevated terrain.
The adverse weather conditions may lead to transportation delays on roads, railways, ferries, and air travel, along with possible short-term power outages and service disruptions. Despite the incident, other flights managed to land safely at Edinburgh earlier today.
An easyJet spokesperson expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the weather-related diversion. Ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers and crew remains the airline’s top priority.
