A dramatic collision involving two vehicles caused a lorry to catch fire on a busy highway, sending tires soaring up to “30 feet into the air”.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the A1 section between the Thistly Cross roundabout and Haddington in East Lothian, Scotland, at approximately 3:50 pm today. The road was promptly blocked off, and motorists were advised to steer clear of the vicinity. Startling footage from the scene depicted a lorry engulfed in flames, emitting thick smoke clouds from the vehicle, according to a report by Edinburgh Live.
An eyewitness present at the incident, Mark Innes, recounted, “The lorry continued moving along the highway, and suddenly it caught fire. It was a frightening sight, almost like a scene from a movie. Thankfully, everyone is safe.”
“I managed to park my van in a safe spot, and at that moment, there were bystanders and other drivers assisting. When I rushed over, the driver had already exited the vehicle, visibly shaken and distressed. The lorry was exploding, with tires being propelled up to thirty feet in the air, crashing down and igniting nearby bushes,” Innes added.
Statement from Police Scotland read, “Following a two-vehicle collision reported around 3:50 pm on Wednesday, 11th March, the A1 northbound is shut down between the Thistly Cross roundabout and the Haddington exit. Commuters are advised to seek alternative routes.”
Earlier, Traffic Scotland cautioned drivers to “anticipate delays” and “find alternate paths” due to the closure of the A1 northbound at Haddington at approximately 4 pm.
