“Starmer to Release Key Documents on Mandelson’s Ambassadorship”

Keir Starmer is preparing to release the initial batch of documents concerning Peter Mandelson’s appointment as the UK’s ambassador to Washington. This move follows the government’s agreement to MPs’ demands last month for the disclosure of numerous files related to Lord Mandelson’s 2024 appointment. The release aims to address concerns surrounding the vetting process and Mandelson’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

Scheduled to be unveiled shortly after Prime Minister’s Questions, the first set of documents will offer insights into the vetting procedures, including the due diligence conducted by the Cabinet Office and shared with Mr. Starmer in advance. Certain documents may be withheld on grounds of national security or foreign relations considerations.

The final decision on redactions lies with Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee, which may exclude WhatsApp communications between senior officials and Lord Mandelson post-appointment from the released papers. The veteran Labour figure was dismissed by Starmer as ambassador in September last year, sparking renewed scrutiny following the US Department of Justice’s release of additional information on the Epstein case.

In February, Lord Mandelson, aged 72, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of misconduct in public office, amid allegations of divulging sensitive details to Epstein. He was recently relieved of his bail conditions, and his passport was returned as investigations continue.

Allegations surfaced from US Department of Justice documents suggesting Mandelson had shared confidential insights with Epstein, including advance knowledge of an EU bailout during the 2008 financial crisis. Police searched his London residence valued at £7.6 million and the Wiltshire farmhouse he rents. Mandelson resigned from the House of Lords after the release of new DoJ documents in January and was subsequently removed as the US ambassador by Starmer.

Further revelations about Mandelson’s association with Epstein emerged from new emails, prompting his arrest for misconduct in public office. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the 72-year-old man’s release under investigation, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the inquiry.
