“Former Footballer Joey Barton Detained After Golf Club Assault”

Former professional footballer Joey Barton has been detained in custody after facing charges of assault stemming from an altercation at a golf club. Barton, who previously played for Manchester City and Newcastle United, was allegedly involved in a dispute near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside on Sunday evening. Authorities revealed on Tuesday that Barton, 43, and Gary O’Grady, 50, were charged in connection with an alleged assault in Huyton the previous night.

The duo appeared before Liverpool magistrates and faced charges of assault causing grievous bodily harm. Barton, attired in glasses, a blue top, and white trousers, only confirmed his identity and address during the court proceedings.

According to the court, a confrontation ensued between Barton and the purported victim, Kevin Lynch, 51, following a heated discussion at the bar. Subsequently, a group of males was seen outside, with two individuals allegedly assaulting a man by punching, kicking, stomping, and kicking him while he was on the ground. Medical professionals expressed concerns that Lynch sustained a permanent, irreversible injury and could potentially lose vision in one eye.

After a brief hearing lasting 20 minutes, District Judge James Hatton granted O’Grady conditional bail, but Barton was denied bail and remanded in custody. Both men are scheduled to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on April 7.

Lynch, known for his involvement in non-league football in Merseyside, serves as the head teacher at NexGen Academy in Dovecot, an educational institution catering to children with special needs. Following his playing career, Lynch transitioned into coaching, managing several non-league teams in the region, including Marine and Prescot Cables.

O’Grady, who has been photographed post-arrest, has also been remanded in custody according to reports. Merseyside Police confirmed that two individuals were charged following the assault in Huyton, which resulted in serious injuries to the victim.

Law enforcement maintained a significant presence at the golf club as they continued their investigation, with access to the premises being restricted until midday on Tuesday.
