UK Braces for Snow as Cold Front Approaches

Parts of the United Kingdom are likely to experience snowfall this week based on recent weather maps. Cities such as London, Birmingham, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent, Swansea, Belfast, and Glasgow, along with their surrounding areas, may encounter snow or ice on Friday, as indicated by the ECMWF weather model.

Scotland is expected to be covered with snow overnight on Friday, with the Western Isles and Highlands anticipated to receive the heaviest snowfall. Northern Ireland, particularly County Antrim, Belfast, County Tyrone, and Londonderry, could also see snow accumulations by 9 am on Friday.

In England, snow is forecasted to fall over the Pennines and the Lake District overnight before moving southward. Areas like London, west Cornwall, north Devon, and the outskirts of Bristol might experience snow in the morning, with most areas likely to clear by the afternoon, except for parts of south-west England.

Central England, including Lincolnshire and Staffordshire, as well as parts of Wales like Swansea, could witness snowfall in the afternoon. Snow is expected to persist over significant portions of Scotland and north-west England in the evening.

The Met Office has cautioned that Friday will be notably colder than preceding days, with snow anticipated in various regions, particularly in north-west England. Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth mentioned a significant change in the air mass on Thursday night into Friday, leading to colder temperatures and possible frost, along with strong winds.

Showers, including snowfall at lower elevations and a mix of hail, are expected in northwestern areas on Friday. The risk of ice is also present through Friday morning and into Saturday morning.

Met Office weather maps show unsettled conditions on Friday, with snowfall projected for regions like north-west England, north Wales, and parts of Scotland. Chilly temperatures are expected across the country, with continued unsettled weather through the weekend.

Looking ahead to March 14-23, the Met Office foresees changeable conditions with periodic rain and strong winds, particularly in the west and north-west. Drier spells are likely, mainly in the south and east, with temperatures around average but occasional colder periods bringing frost and hill snow.
