“UK Energy Suppliers Mandated to Fix Faulty Smart Meters in 90 Days”

Energy suppliers will be required to rectify faulty smart meters within 90 days as per new regulations. Many households have encountered issues with their smart meters failing to send automatic readings to suppliers. Failure to fix non-functioning smart meters within the stipulated timeframe may result in penalties or legal consequences imposed by the regulator Ofgem.

Starting early May, the new rules will be enforced. Recently, households have become eligible for a £40 compensation if they experience problems during smart meter installations. For instance, compensation will be granted if households wait over six weeks for a smart meter appointment.

Compensation will also be applicable if an installation appointment fails due to the supplier’s fault or if a reported issue remains unresolved for more than five working days. Smart meters are utilized by nearly 40 million homes and small enterprises in the UK.

By 2033, energy suppliers must replace all smart meters still connected to 2G and 3G networks before these services are discontinued. Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey emphasized the importance of timely smart meter repairs to enhance standards and benefit consumers financially.

Victoria Bacon, Director of Communications at Smart Energy GB, highlighted the positive impact of smart meters, with a high percentage operating in smart mode and the majority of users expressing satisfaction. The new rules aim to ensure a positive experience for households, promote more smart meter installations, and enable better control over energy usage and access to cost-saving tariffs.
