A man has been sentenced to prison for engaging in sexual activities with a minor after his partner discovered his actions and contacted the authorities.
Lewis Herman, who was 20 years old when he started communicating with a 14-year-old girl on Snapchat, initially lied about his age, claiming to be 17. He solicited explicit photos from her and sent a video of himself engaging in a sexual act, according to ChronicleLive.
Subsequently, he arranged to meet the girl at her residence, where sexual encounters occurred in his vehicle in the Teesside region. The court heard that a similar incident took place on a separate occasion.
During sentencing, Recorder Christopher Rose informed Herman, now 21 and residing on Westmorland Road, that a former partner of his had become aware of his previous misconduct with the victim and reported it to law enforcement.
Herman was found guilty of eight crimes, including communicating sexually with a minor, exposing a minor to sexual acts, engaging in sexual activities with a minor, and encouraging a minor to participate in sexual activities. He admitted to facilitating the dissemination of child abuse images and encouraging the sharing of such content.
He received a total prison term of six years, along with a lifelong obligation to register as a sex offender. Additionally, he will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order for a decade.
In a statement detailing the impact on her, the girl expressed profound distress over the events, noting a significant decline in her mental well-being and increased anxiety. She shared her struggles with sleep disturbances, recurring nightmares, and persistent feelings of self-blame.
She revealed feeling unsafe and uncomfortable being alone, even with Herman in custody, citing panic attacks triggered by encountering individuals resembling him.
Victoria Lamballe, representing Herman, acknowledged that while he continues to present a version of events rejected by the jury, he has come to terms with their verdict and recognizes his unhealthy fixation on sexual matters.
