“Resilient Nine-Year-Old Beats Kidney Failure and Cancer”

A mother has shared the incredible journey of her young daughter, who defied medical odds after facing serious health challenges. Jennifer McNeill, 43, is the proud mother of Bay, a nine-year-old girl who has battled through kidney failure, a kidney transplant, and a diagnosis of bowel cancer.

Bay’s health struggles began in February 2018 when she fell ill at the age of two. Initially dismissed as a virus by doctors, Bay’s condition worsened over time, leading to a critical situation where she was diagnosed with kidney failure and rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Despite the dire circumstances, Bay’s resilience shone through, with the support of her family and the charity Spread a Smile, which brings joy to sick children in hospitals. Through intensive medical care and the selfless kidney donation from her twin sister Mimi, Bay underwent a successful kidney transplant and battled through complications post-surgery.

Following the transplant, Bay faced new challenges when she was diagnosed with bowel cancer in December 2024. She underwent chemotherapy and immunotherapy, enduring a tough journey that eventually led to remission in November 2025. Now, Bay continues her recovery, requiring regular monitoring and staying engaged with activities she loves.

Jennifer expressed her gratitude for the immense support from Spread a Smile and the medical teams that guided them through Bay’s complex health journey. Despite the uncertainties and fears they faced, Jennifer remains hopeful for the future, cherishing each moment with her resilient daughter.
