“Police clash with protesters in Bristol city center”

Police officers were seen using batons against counter-demonstrators in a UK city center during a march. Mounted officers attempted to push back protesters in Bristol, while colleagues on foot resorted to striking masked demonstrators on the legs after multiple warnings to disperse. The counter-demonstrators, including anti-racism and anti-fascism groups, tried to block a march by a group calling themselves the ‘Bristol Patriots’, promoting an “anti-extremism” message.

Around 40 individuals from the ‘Bristol Patriots’ group departed under heavy police escort, causing disruptions in Bristol city center. Counter-demonstrators lined the route, hurling abuse and chants at the marchers. The situation escalated when the marchers found themselves surrounded by counter-protesters at Union Street, prompting police intervention.

Mounted police and officers on the ground used force to clear a path for the march, leading to clashes with the counter-protesters. The march faced further obstacles as more counter-protesters obstructed the route, resulting in a halt. Eventually, the police decided to redirect the march back to its original route amid multiple arrests for various offenses.

Police spokespersons explained that the use of force was necessary to ensure the safety of all involved and to maintain order between the two groups. The march eventually concluded peacefully as the two groups dispersed. Neighbourhood Policing Inspector John Shaddick emphasized the police’s priority of facilitating peaceful protests while ensuring public safety and addressing disruptive behavior promptly.
