“Scotland Introduces ‘Boil-in-the-Bag’ Water Cremations”

A new environmentally friendly option known as ‘boil-in-the-bag’ cremations is poised to make its debut in the UK, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional burials and cremations.

Scotland has become the pioneering country within the UK to legalize water cremations this week, a move anticipated to gain popularity in response to the growing demand for eco-conscious funeral practices.

Known as alkaline hydrolysis or aquamation, the process mimics natural decomposition after burial but in a condensed timeframe by utilizing a potent alkaline solution to decompose the body.

During the procedure, the deceased is submerged in a solution containing 5% alkaline, like potassium hydroxide, for three to four hours in a high-pressure metal chamber heated to around 150°C (300°F).

This process dissolves body tissues, leaving only bones, which are then dried and pulverized into a powdery substance using a device called a cremulator. The remains are then placed in an urn for loved ones to scatter or bury, similar to traditional cremation ashes.

The remaining liquid is cooled, treated, and discharged into wastewater systems where it undergoes standard processing alongside regular wastewater, as it is sterile and devoid of solids or DNA.

Jenni Minto, the public health minister of the Scottish government, highlighted the significance of the new option, stating that it provides an eco-friendly alternative to traditional burial or cremation, reflecting the public’s desire for more diverse funeral choices.

Prior to the commencement of water cremations in Scotland, the installation of hydrolysis equipment is required, subject to planning authorization and Scottish Water’s approval.

While Scotland’s decision does not automatically impact other UK countries, the Law Commission in England and Wales is currently exploring a broader legal framework for innovative funeral practices, with a proposed Bill expected later this year.

Helen Chandler, General Manager of Kindly Earth, working closely with Resomation Ltd, the exclusive UK provider of water cremation equipment, emphasized the milestone set by the new Scottish regulations in the funeral sector.

Chandler noted the growing interest in water cremation due to its perceived gentler nature compared to traditional cremation methods, with many individuals also motivated by environmental concerns and the potential to opt for more sustainable practices.

In countries where water cremation is legal, prices typically range from £1,180 to £3,950, depending on the provider and location, as per the Farewell Guide.
