“Urgent Need for Action on Online Safety for Women and Youth”

Issues related to online safety disproportionately affect young individuals and women due to exposure to inappropriate content and abusive behaviors in spaces lacking proper security measures.

It is crucial for both online platforms and regulatory bodies to take responsibility for addressing these challenges rather than placing the burden solely on users. As a research fellow at the Centre for Protecting Women Online, I am deeply concerned about the frequent oversight of the harmful experiences faced by girls and young women. While the UK boasts advanced online safety legislation, it falls short in adequately addressing the specific concerns of women and girls, primarily due to the lack of preventive measures in current laws.

The existing legal framework exhibits significant gaps, particularly concerning harm based on gender, necessitating stricter accountability for platforms and more robust enforcement against rule violators.

Emphasizing the importance of integrating safety measures into technology, it is imperative to enforce stronger consequences when failures occur in protecting both children and adults online.

While implementing a ban for individuals under 16 may seem like a definitive solution, it risks excluding them from online spaces rather than promoting reform. Such a ban could inadvertently shift responsibility to children, leading them towards less regulated platforms and indicating a lack of confidence in the effectiveness of the Online Safety Act.

Solutions to these issues already exist in terms of knowledge and policy tools that can establish safer digital environments for women and girls. What is now essential is the political determination to implement these solutions effectively and hold platforms accountable for their actions.

In the interim, my advice to parents and caregivers of young individuals and women navigating the online landscape is to engage with the challenges rather than succumb to fear. Open discussions about online issues and encouraging curiosity are key to promoting a safe online experience. It is vital to remember that parents, caregivers, and online users are also navigating these spaces and should seek advice and support when necessary.

Although civil society organizations, researchers, and advocates have developed evidence-based solutions to tackle online harms, the government must prioritize enhancing platform safety for all users. Strengthening existing legislation under the Online Safety Act, addressing protection gaps, and holding companies accountable are crucial steps to ensuring a safer online environment.

I urge policymakers not to rush into drastic measures before thoroughly testing the laws they have fought to implement. To participate in the government consultation on ‘Growing up in an online world’ or for additional support on related issues, visit the NSPCC and InternetMatters.org.
