Many women are downplaying their achievements on social media, with 40% feeling pressure to appear humble. A survey of 2,000 adults found that 24% of women frequently minimize their successes, and 36% have chosen not to share posts about significant accomplishments.
Only 6% of women feel comfortable sharing their achievements on platforms like Instagram or LinkedIn. When they do share, 30% tend to tone down their messages before posting. This trend is linked to the belief that women who openly celebrate their successes face more scrutiny compared to men.
The study, conducted by Galaxy Chocolate in collaboration with The Unhumble Project, aims to empower women to speak confidently about their achievements. Comedian Rachel Parris, involved in the project, encourages women to share their wins without hesitation.
Some examples of women’s “unhumble brags” include being one of the first female drag queens, securing a better-paying job after redundancy, and learning to play the ukulele during lockdown. The research also reveals that 63% of women feel pressured to downplay their accomplishments in both personal and professional settings.
Despite this pressure, 53% of women believe that being more self-assured in discussing their achievements would positively impact their lives. Additionally, 40% of women find it easier to celebrate others’ achievements rather than their own, with concerns about their achievements not being “worth” mentioning.
Romi Mackiewicz, Galaxy brand director, emphasizes the importance of women embracing their successes without feeling the need to diminish them. Claire Reindorp, chief executive at Young Women’s Trust, highlights the significance of women sharing their successes to inspire others and drive career progression.
The campaign aims to encourage women to celebrate their wins openly and confidently, free from self-censorship, fostering a culture of self-celebration and empowerment among women.
