UK Woman Detained in Dubai Faces Life Imprisonment

A distressed mother from the UK has shared her anguish regarding her daughter’s detention in Dubai amidst ongoing missile strikes in the region. Antonia Bettridge, aged 25, relocated to the UAE in November 2023, initially working as a sports coach before transitioning to real estate and pursuing qualifications as a personal trainer.

However, the fitness enthusiast from St Helens, Merseyside, now faces potential life imprisonment after being arrested on alleged drug charges. The exact timing of Antonia’s arrest remains unclear, but reports suggest it occurred at the beginning of the previous month. Legal advisors have confirmed that she is being held under UAE’s narcotics legislation for suspected “possession of narcotics with intent to promote.”

If found guilty, the 25-year-old could be sentenced to life imprisonment and a possible AED 200,000 fine. According to the Liverpool Echo, Dubai authorities do not require proof of intent to promote or distribute drugs. Antonia’s mother, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed confusion and fear over her daughter’s arrest, emphasizing Antonia’s dedication to fitness and healthy living, stating that she had moved to Dubai to build a positive future.

Concerned about the regional turmoil and her daughter’s detention, she emphasized the importance of clarity and safety for Antonia. Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, assisting the family, highlighted the heightened concerns for individuals detained in the UAE amid regional conflicts, urging support for defendants to prepare their cases outside of detention.

Antonia had previously faced legal issues in 2023 when she was convicted of possessing criminal property in Liverpool. Following a police search that uncovered a significant sum of money in her possession, she received a community order involving rehabilitation activities and unpaid work, along with court costs to cover.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed its support for the British woman detained in the UAE, emphasizing the need for vigilance among British expats in Dubai due to escalating tensions in the region. With ongoing conflicts affecting flight schedules and security concerns, individuals are advised to stay informed, avoid sensitive areas, and follow local guidelines.

In light of recent events, the Foreign Office now advises against non-essential travel to the UAE due to heightened security risks. Reports of a drone strike on the US consulate building in Dubai have raised alarm, prompting authorities to ensure public safety while providing updates through official channels.

The situation in the region remains fluid, and residents are urged to remain cautious and informed about developments as they unfold.
