Russian Warships Tracked Through British Waters

Two Russian warships were detected passing through British waters while the Royal Navy was summoned to oversee the situation. Over the past week, the Royal Navy closely monitored two sanctioned Russian cargo vessels and their accompanying warships as part of an extensive NATO operation stretching from the Mediterranean to the North Sea. The HMS Tyne, a patrol vessel based in Portsmouth, and a Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron at Yeovilton were deployed to track the Russian Navy Ropucha-class landing ship Aleksandr Otrakovsky and the merchant vessel Sparta IV.

During the Russians’ journey across the Atlantic, through the English Channel, and into the North Sea, the British warship Tyne utilized advanced sensors and radars to monitor their every move. Simultaneously, the Wildcat conducted surveillance above the Channel to enhance security. Initially intercepted by HMS Cutlass from the Royal Navy’s Gibraltar Squadron in the Strait of Gibraltar’s Traffic Separation Scheme, the Russian ships were later monitored by an allied vessel on their northward route.

Following this, HMS Tyne conducted surveillance operations in the Atlantic approaches to the Channel. Just 48 hours after completing this mission, HMS Tyne and a Wildcat were redeployed to monitor another Russian Ropucha-class warship, Aleksandr Shabalin, and the cargo ship MV Sabetta as they traveled westward through the English Channel.

Defense Secretary John Healey MP expressed pride in the actions of the Armed Forces in safeguarding Britain both domestically and overseas. He emphasized the message to Russia that the UK is vigilant and prepared to track, deter, and defend the nation while supporting its allies.

Lieutenant Commander Matt Cavill, the Executive Officer of HMS Tyne, highlighted the importance of maintaining the security of the nation and collaborating with allied nations to demonstrate collective strength. Commander James Woods, the Commanding Officer of 815 Naval Air Squadron, praised the professionalism and effectiveness of the squadron in providing timely situational awareness and supporting maritime security operations.

The activation showcased the readiness and capability of the UK’s military personnel and aircraft in safeguarding national interests and fulfilling NATO commitments.
